Yeah, I know. The debug setting mentioned in the support group outright fixes the flickering, but it will chomp about 20fps off (that's how much it ate from me, anyway).

No idea about Niran's. Honestly, after I got used to Exodus, I've uninstalled everything else except Catznip.

We're not entirely sure what is causing the problem, as I've experience it a few times on the official Snowstorm viewer. It seems to be rather sporadic and rare at times so it's hard to track down.

An interesting article popped up on Nalate's blog about Exodus Viewer, along with a curious 'An Aside' on page 3 of the article.

as far as i can tell it has something to do with llvolumes and triangle indices, but that could be completely wrong too. all i know is, a lot of tweaking in llvolume.cpp helped me with those spasmatic meshes.

as far as Rebake vs Texture Refresh, if you're using ADSL to connect to sl or a very latent connection, rebaking will take a few times to get you the high resolution layers, it's a crap shoot with DSL and bad wiring like i have, but if you can refresh your own avatar after baking, you should see your high resolution self for whatever reason right away because you aren't sending a rebake in, you're fetching it like you would any other texture.

It actually depends on the mesh. There's a person or two I know that are wearing mesh hoodies that cause it pretty much most of the time. Might be an idea to get copies of those for testing. I'll inquire about the creator.

I had that idea at first, but when I leave/re-log it doesn't seem to happen anymore.

I am wearing said hoodie so that may be why I see it so much.

But it renders fine on Vanilla.

Yeah I wondered about that whole article. The author didn't put a link to the podcast anywhere in the copy so I can't go back and listen to it myself. I'm not sure that English is the author's first language judging from the way they contradict themselves with "do" and "do not" statements etc.

One thing that I did find curious in the podcast report was the section talking about how v1.23 viewers and viewers that still use those V1 protocols (Firestorm & Phoenix for example) put more load on the sim since the newer V3 protocols bypass the sim server to talk directly to the asset server etc, and that sim owners have noticed performance decreases whenever a lot of people running one of those "legacy protocol" viewers are on their region.

I'm really interested in knowing more about it. I know that HTTP textures and inventory should help. Does anyone else have any more information on this phenomenon?

The times I notice most are when a friend who wears the mon tissu a-line skirt shows up. There are others that do it too, but those are not regular enough for me to have noticed a pattern

Ok I listened to the podcast and they explained it pretty clearly.

You can listen to it here by the way, just click one of the links at the bottom of the article.

In a nutshell (just the facts):

Old viewers use the old protocols that interact with the simulator itself to pull inventory, assets (textures etc), and profiles down to the viewer. My understanding is the sim itself is the endpoint that the viewer talks to. This puts load on the sim for each person using these old protocols.

New viewers that use HTTP for inventory, asset fetching, and profiles bypass the simulator entirely and talk straight to the source. In other words a person using a V3 is less of a load on a sim.

The good news is MOST new viewers (and this includes even V1 based viewers like Singularity, CoolVL, Phoenix, etc) have been updated to use these new HTTP protocols save for maybe the way they handle profiles. While all V3 viewers can use the HTTP methods natively, you do have the ability to switch that off in some viewers and use the old protocol, with Firestorm being a good example of that.

The moral of the story is: use HTTP textures and inventory whenever possible.

I recommend listening to the podcast because they go into it a bit more colorfully than I want to. It's very enlightening to say the least.

Uhg I keep accidently muting things during crucial times. XD
Now I can't edit something with a menu cause I can't unblock it!
This needs to be put up high on the fix list...
and maybe make the mute button harder to hit accidentnly.

I haven't accidentally hit the Mute button before, but it seems like it might be a good idea to have a "Are you sure you want to mute this object" prompt if that button is pushed.

Yeah, I've tried to learn to avoid it but I don't even know how I pressed it just now as I thought I was far away from that button. But then it got pressed and couldn't be undone and I'm not at a point where I can relog into another viewer...

EDIT: *Chokes at the way her sentences sound.*

This is the 3rd time Exodus has decided to wear my ENTIRE inventory when attempting to wear a folder. It's very painful to fix; takes time because dropping all attachments will just crash you and only drop the current 35 attachments.

does that happen to other people? I would like to try Exodus, but if there is a bug as serious as this one I am afraid that I will have to hold off for now o.O

It's specific to Exodus for me but I don't know anyone else with the issue. My inventory seems to be unique in that I have capabilities on my inventory that I really shouldn't (nor want to) have.

I've had that on other viewers before I ever installed Exodus. It is a pain when that happens.

That sounds like a bug I definitely want to avoid.

Does it happen only when you right click an outfit folder and pick "wear" or does it also affect you when you use saved outfits on the appearance tab?

If it's the latter I just jinxed myself.

Only folder wearing; but I wouldn't know since I don't use the formal outfit system. (It came around far too late for me, plus I rez things to mod which breaks links)

This happened to me once, back when I tried Firestorm. My entire inventory attempted to attach itself to my avatar. The end result was that I crashed mightily hard. When I would log in, I would crash as it attempted to load the massive "outfit" I was wearing.

The end result was that I had to use something text-based to go in and nuke the contents of the "Current Outfit" folder, which amounted to some 60 thousand item links. Once that was done, I was able to log in fine.

So, no, this is not an Exodus problem.

Oy, well It hasn't happened for 5 years and just happened 3 times in 2 weeks so SOMETHING changed. Good to hear it's not Exodus.

It's unrelated to exodus or firestorm;

It happened to me before like this:

1. wear a folder
2. select another folder to wear
3. inventory links get made from wearing the first folder, and suddenly the whole inventory is selected
4. don't notice fast enough, hit 'add to outfit'
5. OMGWTFBBQ

So it's a v3 thing with the selection changing to the whole inventory when an inventory link gets created and the inventory jumping..or something. I bet it also can happen if inventory links get removed...in cases of one doing 'remove from outfit' on a folder, and then trying 'add to outfit' on another too quickly.

yes I have done what Chalice describes once before...it certainly was not fun!
Fortunately, it should not be necessary to use a text-based viewer to empty the 'current outfit' folder - I have found that Cool VL viewer and similar V1 based viewers are very good at this since they do not actually try to wear everything inside that folder.
