I think outright banning it might not be necessary, but definitely nothing less than removing it from the TPV registry.

Perhaps doing a suspension kind of system, ban it for a few days, explain why, and let their users get pissed at the Emerald devs for getting it suspended, give them 3 strikes. If they have to suspend 3 times then the viewer gets banned. Banning it for a few days too will let people get a glimpse at what else is out there.

the emerald client is the biggest mess that i've ever seen.

... and i've seen the actual source code. the current emerald client already violates at least two points of the third party viewer policy before you even compile it, and that's just the source code...

... add the behaviour of the developers, and their attitude and history and the questionable legality of their other projects, and i'd say phil should NOT ONLY drop emerald from the tpv list and block it from logging in.

In my eyes this should be the course of action:

1. emerald is dropped from the tpv directory
2. emerald and all its derivatives are blacklisted and blocked from ever connecting to any sl-compatible grid under the control of linden labs
3. all people involved with emerald and/or modular systems are permabanned from the grid
4. all persons behind avatars that are banned in 3. are served a court order to never again create an account for second life.

You're a freak. Not everyone involved with Emerald has done anything wrong to quite deserve that level of reaction.

This is why people don't take your kind very seriously, and why they rightly say some of you are on a witchhunt. I'm not against dropping it from TPV directory, in fact that's advisable, but the rest of your advice will only result in an equal and opposite reaction to support Emerald once again.

You know that only dropping emerald from the TPV directory will have ZERO effect, right?

People using emerald will continue to use it, and continue to point others to it, and continue to be ill used by "someone who happens to be an emerald developer but did not do it by order of the emerald team" (it being whatever evil trick they're going to pull next)

In RL, people involved in computer crime do get court orders like the one described... and last time I looked, using other people's computers for your own means without consent was a crime, and so was disruption of service (a dDOS attack, among other things). In most civilized countries, storage of personal information without consent and secretly is a crime too (onyx/CDS anyone?)

I'm not against banning it for a few days either. But banning EVERYONE involved with it, down to Arabella, Jessica, the new Lindens who joined before this shit hit the fan, Voted 5 style, is not something i am down with.

I wasn't for it with Voted 5, I wasn't for it with Woodbury, I am not for it in Emerald. Unlike the first two, the last one is going to have massive reaction on the grid.

Gently, gently, wean people off the teat and show them alternatives. But I've spoken to enough Emerald users to know that most of them will not quit using the software, and will only become more entrenched or even quit SL altogether if they don't have a similar alternative to switch to. So get cracking on developing a useful alternative.

Ask oz linden why not all of them are in the TPV directory even though they are policy compliant and the application forms have been sitting on his desk since april.

They don't have all the features. I know, I use plenty of them.

Looks like Imprudence is the only one who is interested in giving people what they want, as opposed to the usual opensource dreck of giving people what they think they need.

This one engineering "I know better than you" mindset is why I really dislike many opensource projects (even though the idea of opensource isn't automatically a bad one)
