Sacred Rights of the International Two Spirit Gathering

Beyond the bathroom doors, men and women dance around a drum in more traditional costume—feathers, fox pelts, moccasins, beads, and bells. They’re all here for the 20th annual International Two Spirit Gathering, a celebration of and for those who feel they carry both male and female spirits.

When I was on Hopi, I spent a few days with a gay Hopi man who had the most amazing costume drag/sewing room tucked away in what was once his parents back shed.
He taught me how to prepare, in immense quantities overnight for a family ceremony, hominy over an open fire, all the time calling me "mule" (because as the n00b I had to do the fetching and carrying).
He did face a lot of grief from people outside of his immediate family, and kept his hobbies to himself.
However, the "two spirit" concept was certainly known...in particular I had a few discussions about this with Navajo friends of mine.
Anyhow, enjoy, and this post is for him.
