Edit for conversational value: My method of skin-shopping is to pick up a gaziligoogle demos, go home and stand there in my workshop naked trying them on (naked because I do not care for skins that have muddy shadows on the bum or under the boobies). Sometimes it takes a few minutes for them to rez completely, and if so I just IM or sort inventory while I'm waiting. Then I make a notecard and rate each demo, gradually narrowing down to the one or two I liked the most from my last batch of demos.
After that is done, I put my old skin back on and ask myself "Is the new one that much better to warrant the change?" If the answer's yes, I buy. But at no time do I fiddle with my shape.
