I disagreed only on your comment that they may have been more intelligent.
They weren't apes, but there's not much controversy over them belonging to a different species. Their DNA is very close to ours, but different enough to deserve separation.
And no, they weren't stupid, but their cultural development wasn't anywhere near that of
homo sapiens. While they may have had some form of rudimentary speech, their tribes were not organized as efficiently as ours (see my previous post) and this could well have been a major reason they became extinct in the face of climactic change and population pressure from
Cro Magnon.
