With abandonment, LL gets to re-sell the server that the previous owner "bought" from them. This arrangement -- which we've all (including myself) basically swallowed as the cost of living in
SL -- is such a sweet win-win for them. If they called it a "setup fee," the massively inflated nature of the figure would be obvious, so instead they call it a purchase even though you get absolutely nothing beyond the right to keep paying them tier every month.
