I wondered about that too. I have had several black eyes from going over jumps without my horse and landing on my (helmeted) head or face and getting knocked around in speed skating and inline racing. Every time I have had a black eye because of an elbow etc hitting my eye, the eyelid and area around the eye has swollen and looked horrible. I always loved that because I am not the fighting type.

The only time I have had a black eye without swelling was when I hit my forehead and nose hard enough on the ice/boards to get knocked out - the MD explained that I would probably get a black eye because of the bleeding under the skin would settle under my eyes at night when I slept (I may have mangled what he meant). He was right - I looked like a raccoon with both eyes the next day, but my forehead also had a giant swollen bump and my nose was bruised and swollen.
I hate to doubt someone who may have been assaulted, but
