She said she was the victim of a hate crime, but now police say a 19-year-old Elmhurst College student made up her story that a masked man attacked her in a campus restroom because she's a Muslim.
Safia Z. Jilani, a 19-year-old sophomore at the school, was charged Friday with filing a false police report, a Class 4 felony punishable by one to three years in prison, Elmhurst police said.

Her story fell apart during a weeklong investigation by three detectives assigned to the case, Elmhurst Police Chief Steven Neubauer said.
"We looked at evidence and statements from the victim and extensive interviews with staff and students at the college. That led us to believe this never occurred," he said.
Jilani, of Oak Brook, had claimed the attacker struck her in the head with a handgun on Oct. 9 in a campus restroom. Threatening graffiti -- "Kill the Muslims" -- was found scrawled on a mirror in the restroom.
At a demonstration earlier that day, Jilani had denounced anti-Islamic slurs and a swastika she had discovered on her locker on Oct. 2.
