Yes - "scratched" is more accurate than "carved". That seems to be about as little damage one could do while still resulting in a "B". If true, it is still horrifying. But I would think it would be hard to hold down a person and use that uniformly light touch against someone's face, presumably while they writhed and try to jerk away. Even if you would afraid of making the attacker more angry, I doubt few could remain perfectly still in the time it takes to scratch a "B" that is perfectly aligned and of even depth into their face.
