I don't know the ins and outs of the technical aspects what Sakai and team is doing but, I had a lengthy conversation with him yesterday that convinced me this statement isn't true. Not being disparaging with you at all Adam. Hopefully Sakai will post here and glean a bit of info for everyone.
I like the ability of OSGrid to connect your own sims to the network but, I've pitched full in with OpenLife for various other reasons.
