I love Maine. The economy is bad, but it is like that everywhere.

If you're looking for nightlife...um...Maine is not for you, but Portland is the best of the lot. If you like quiet, or the outdoors. Maine is wonderful.

I couldn't imagine not being able to go *here* for 'thinking time'...
I visited a friend of the family (a wonderful guy my mother's age) in Maine once. It was beautiful and serene, and we went walking on a beach just like that.

And on the plane ride back to NYC, I was treated by an overview of Vermont in the full throes of fall! (I think it was Vermont, anyway. I'm a geographically-challenged individual.)

A canopy of ENDLESS beautiful treetops in fall colors. The girl sitting behind me on the plane was so overcome she had to tap me on the shoulder to make sure I was sharing the experience with her.

It's funny about towns and cities. Very personal, actually.

I was regaling my husband on a trip one time with this lengthy recital of all the towns and cities I'd lived in and the ones I loved the best, and the ones I hated.

In brief:

I love NYC and Atlanta and Michigan City, Indiana, with every fiber of my being. You will pry those cities out of my hands over my cold, dead body.

I also have a deep fondness for the beauty (albeit squalor) of the northwest corner of Arkansas, but that's in a different category, because I wouldn't want to live there again.

I disliked living in Austin, Houston (too much humidity), and Tulsa. I wasn't wild about Ann Arbor.

Austin, you say? You hated living in AUSTIN?

Yes I did. I didn't care for the weather, and I had some crappy things happen in my college years which unfortunately colored the experience. And last time I was there, which wasn't long ago, the traffic was just ridiculous.

I guess I have no particular fondness for my alma mater, either. Don't DISlike it; just have no particular fondness for it, and lots of my Texas friends do.
