I would recommend south central PA. The housing crisis has barely touched this area. The job situation is good. The largest employer is the Commonwealth, you have experience living in the are of a capitol city. But in this state they can't operate without a balanced budget so we aren't working on a deficit. We also have a pretty healthy economy compared to the rest of the country and western PA.

Anyway its close to several major cities, Baltimore, DC, Philly, NYC and the Jersey Shore and Ocean City. All 4 hours away at the most.

For interesting spots. Well there is Hershey know for chocolate of course and the amusement park. Also a pretty dang good medical center.
Gettysburg if you are into the whole civil war thing
If you are outdoorsy there is plenty to do. But I'm a city gal so I have no idea.

PA is a great state. I'd recommend it.
I would have to second this. I've lived in Lancaster Co. in Southcentral PA for my whole life. It's easy to get places, you're relatively close to so much, and where I live is a small(ish) town area and nice place to raise my kids. The school district we're in operates pretty well, I'm pleased with what my kids are doing there.

A lot of the area is rural, but not as "backward" as some people seem to think. It's an area famous for the Amish, but since they're expanding into many other states, they're not as "unusual" to the rest of the world as they once were. Still, they bring a lot of tourists into the area in the summer.

P.s. The roads do really suck in Pa, though.
