It's beautiful, small, and out of the way. There isn't too much to "do" in the actual city, but if that doesn't matter if your idea of stuff to do is hiking, canoing, sailing and other outdoorsy stuff. My highschool best friend is going to school up in Maine and lives in Portland over the summers. It's on the Amtrak too so Boston isn't too far away. You would definitely need a tough vehicle though to be able to handle the crazy snow, and wildly varying road conditions. Things are pretty far from each other too, and spaced out once you leave the city limits, so gas would be an issue
