Obama was no different in that respect, I thought - but to me the difference with him is the character of the man behind the words. I think he is genuine and I think he honestly believes he can do all those things he said.
It's a good start. I just hope the glow lasts once he's in office. |
Well it wasn't the food on the table thing that moved me. I mean that's great and maybe he will and maybe he won't. It will largely also depend on the makeup of Congress.
But the thing that got to me was the talk of the country coming together. Of his promise not to smear McCain as not a patriot, of him speaking well of McCain the man, while disagreeing with McCain's social policies. Of saying that we can disagree on issues while respecting each other.
I think if there's anything that's hurt this country the most in the last 8 years its the divisiveness. Its the demonizing of the people who don't agree with you and I'm as guilty of it as anyone. And while nothing will make me say Bush is a good man (well maybe someone worse than Bush) I have friends who are conservatives and so does everyone else (except maybe Richie).
So anyway it was the talk of finding common ground and respecting each other that I found the most powerful.
It might be bullshit but damn that bullshit felt good to hear. And its been a long time since I heard it.
