for heaven's sake, two grave accents (``) DO NOT MAKE AN OPENING DOUBLE QUOTE! yes they sort of slant in the right direction, but the spacing is awful and distracting, and it's *still* not a real opening quote. if you can't figure out how to replace with “ then just give up and use the double prime marks.
