Well, not sure how much the general public here makes the distinction, because you kind of have to be moving in certain circles to be fully aware of what's going on. Bikers are people who like riding bikes, inluding clubs who just like riding bikes, so, just regular people.
Bikies however, are pretty much criminal organisations who like riding bikes. In my city, they run things, drugs, loansharking, club security (which is how I know a lot of them) etc. There's about 5 major gangs, and they're pretty fucking hardcore, and pretty violent between themselves. From time to time it spills out into the clubs, guns and stuff start going off. The last club I worked at, a rival gang to our security came in one night and destroyed the place, put two staff in hospital, and the subsequent publicity killed the club forever (and we were the hottest club in town at the time).
I did however spend three years at art school with a member of one of these gangs, and he was as gentle as a lamb there, we were pretty good friends. But some of the guys I've met, scary, scary motherfuckers. I've rubbed shoulders with at least two infamous murderers.
