I doubt either image was ever totally correct. But he has definitely moved much more toward the party line recently. If you look at his voting record, in 2007 his Senate votes aligned with Bush's desires 95%. This year, his votes align 100%.
If his Paris/Brittany/Obama add wasn't dirty then I don't know what is.
And many of his campaign advisers have close Bush or Rove ties.
And many of his policy statement are an extension of Bush's: War with Iran, troops in Iraq 100 years, more top 1% tax breaks, etc.
