As far as Winter goes, I've always upgraded my boxes the hard way. But I guess if you wanted to upgrade it without redoing the items you'd have to take out the old scripts and drop in the new ones. Assuming the item UUID of the server needs to be unique, not sure though...
But yah, SLX does seem to have more stuff to find. The search on OnRez has improved, at launch it was pretty aweful, it has some nice nuances now though like the ability to search within a search is very useful. I think its more a problem of lack of items and people tagging their items with bogus tags...
