I also have a notecard called "How to make a great avatar" which is compilation of advice I gathered from people on the old SC, plus input from Haver Cole who ran a shapes business. I tried to organize it by category, and it has its own notecard-giver too
Oh, and there's one for "Freebie landmarks for newbs" but I'm not sure how many of them are still active. It has your place, NCI, Yadni's, GNU and some others on it. Actually I think there are tons more freebie spots now than when I wrote the card. Some stores figured out that by giving away free skins and prim hair for newbs they build a customer base.
