Yeah, in the book, they stop in amazement to watch the huge creature pass, discuss how much gas they have and decide to drive on until they run out. They disappear into the mist. The End. Did they make it? We decide.
No having to murder his kid. No moral hints about if only they'd helped the woman at the start, no army and no sun suddenly appearing.
