You would just set your external IP address to your LAN one instead of the default (which is 127.0.0.1); when you first set your region up there's a prompt for it, or if you're editing a region that already exists you would edit the default.xml file in the Regions folder (which should be in the root directory or bin if you're using subversion to update).
Did that, am using the precompiled version though. Here is how it looks:

Code:
<Root>
  <Config sim_UUID="5ce78782-3dc8-44c0-bcdc-3e79b15b7eeb" sim_name="OpenSim Test" sim_location_x="1000" sim_location_y="1000" internal_ip_address="0.0.0.0" internal_ip_port="9000" allow_alternate_ports="false" external_host_name="192.168.1.2" master_avatar_uuid="00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000" estate_covanant_uuid="00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000" master_avatar_first="Mac" master_avatar_last="Angelus" master_avatar_pass="Pass removed of course :D" />
</Root>

Did that, mine was 192.168.1.2 which is how I entered it (Opened the default.xml file with notepad) as shown above.

This part confused me. After I entered the default.xml file and saved it, I used the login icon (didn't ask for a IPaddress, just logged on the Dos window) Then started the OpenSimViewer with the shortcut and got the error message.

I think it is that last part I quoted by you, Joshua that may have a step I missed. I am part of the OpenSims for dummies group.
