I am very happy to report that the mysterious connection reset problem that has plagued the site since shortly after the move to a new server has been resolved, after months of trying to diagnose the exact cause. After exhausting every possible lead I could come up with, it turned out not to be a problem with the server at all, but an issue with a hardware firewall outside of the server. Once it was disabled, the problem disappeared, and the firewall has been replaced and reenabled without the issue reappearing.
Thank you for your patience with this issue, I know it was quite frustrating. It was even more frustrating for me, as what was happening made no sense. I can now get back to continuing to improve
