Yes, there's an active group of people from OpenSim, LL, and IBM all working together in what's being called the AWG: Architecture Working Group. There's also discussion under way about way to teleport between grids, opt-in to several types of currency, and yes, avatar portability as well.

Things are very much in the planning stages at this point.
