I am not so sure that a Black President would have been so unthinkable 12 years ago. In 1984 and again in 1988, Jesse Jackson made credible runs for the Presidency. In 1988, he could conceivably have won the nomination. As it was he finished second to Dukakis. (This would be Jesse Jackson Sr., not his son Jesse Jackson Jr. who is now a Congressman from Obama's home town of Chicago.) As far back as 1976, a Black woman ran for President: Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm. |
