My first grade Brownies won First Place (First Place!!) in the annual Youth Day Parade where we live.
The parade theme for the year was "Friendship." I had them draw themselves - outlining each other on big sheets of cardboard, with their arms slightly out to their sides - then they painted themselves! They painted on their faces and their hair and their little brownie uniforms and stuff, and their name on the skirt. So that you had this, like, life-size, smiling cutout of the little girl.
Then I spray painted them with a glittery glaze (not too glittery, just added a sort of uniform sheen in the sunlight), and tied them together at the hands, with silver and gold streamers hanging down from the hands.
Then my husband attached this now long string of brightly painted cardboard girls holding hands - maybe 14 of them - around the sides of the truck.
And the little girls and I climbed IN the truck for the parade. I think they also had silver and gold balloons or something. Anyway, it was pretty!
And all THROUGH the parade, they were singing the first two verses of that song, which is the official girl scout song or something like that, and especially loudly when we passed by the judges' box.
Was I surprised when we won First Place! But, you know, it was cuteness personified, so I really shouldn't have been so surprised.
Good times, good times.

P.S. I just read Siobhan's. See what you started?
