Everything about Second Life has been myopic and short-sited from the get go. Its been one temporary fix on top of another on top of another. The grid has been held together with duck tape and safety pins for years.
Sometimes it seems as if Second Life as it is has no potential for longevity. Yes, it has paved the way for revolutionizing virtual worlds and for the potential that they can be used for, but as far as the platform goes Second Life will be crushed once a competitor does it better. Unless, however, if they are bought by Google or Microsoft. In which case, who knows a Microsoft virtual world would suck on principal. Google would probably have to rerwrite the entire codebase and make a 2.0 version that actually worked.
