Yeah that's rather vague so i'm not poking into the spaghetti that's
SL viewer with just that either
I guess they had from the beginning ability to handle different URLs than just ones the current viewer passes to quicktime, it just needed some sort of receiver able to handle these 'different' URLs. They got that with the integrated Mozilla code not that long ago and eventually linked these together. So some parts of the system may be ancient, but not all of it.
But aye some word on it from more linden-like source would help... if that matters at all to begin with.
