From what I've read so far, you are absolutely right.
Previously, you chose an avatar name at this site:
Welcome to OpenlifeGrid
But now you create an account by clicking the register link at
Openlife Grid > Home , and add avatar names via the Avatar Toolbox link.
Unfortunately though, avatars created the new way can't login yet, because Sakai is in the middle of merging the two systems.
The new implementation is brilliant because it allows multiple avatars to share the same account and presumably inventory. Something Linden Lab should have implemented in 2003, basically.
