There is nothing trivial about it. The love of a pet is one of the few glimpses we get in life of unconditional love. Well, I like to think my cat Sonic wouldn't sell me out for a better offer at least . Pets have a profound way of becoming a deep, meaningful part of your life, and their loss is as devastating as the loss of any loved one. My heart goes out to you. I have had to put two beloved pets to sleep, and the decision is always heartbreaking.
One thing I would recommend is that, if possible, you immediately get another pet. They can never be replaced, but being able to channel your pain and loss into loving another animal can certainly help to get you through. I'll even give you Sonic if it would help
