Question What's the current state of "new user experience"?

I've been blogging a history series of the sims that existed on SL's official opening day (23 June 03), with photos of builds and other things still there from those days. Here's a quick index: SL History page. I also did a retrospective, on the side, of all the Welcome Areas.

I'm getting ready to cover Plum and Lime, which the oldbies know were clones of Ahern and Morris (Ahern was turned into the 4-wing WA we all know and loathe a couple years later; Plum is still the original design)... and I want to include some talk about the latest changes, since the fiat announcement five weeks ago about ending the Community Gateways.

So, I'm wondering...

Are noobs still being sent to the V2-specific Welcome and Discovery Islands (which have only existed for 7 months)?

If so, where are they being sent next? Or, if not, where are they being sent instead?

Why, since there has always been more than one WA (Plum, Waterhead, Hanja), does it seem that Ahern has been -- and remains -- the sole "dumping ground" for noobs? [Related: why does the SLurl map page still default to Ahern when you open it?]

Why are the old Orientation Island Public and Help Island Public still popular hangouts?

And, since it's a historical piece, any reminiscences about the Plum WA are welcome, too.

Thanks!
