Description: This is a simple interface to the well-known Google Translator Services, so it pretty much gives the same results as Google's translations. It features over 70 languages (not all translation pairs are yet available from Google) but there are 10 presets for the most used languages. You can scroll among the others, though, and see which combinations work (Google is always adding more translation pairs) To use the device, simply right-click and wear it. It attaches as a HUD to the Center-2 position, but you should be able to attach it elsewhere. Now select a language pair. Remember, the GUUD Universal Translator will assume you're speaking in a language, and wish to translate it to another one (people and objects around you will be translated back using the reverse translation). So the HUD displays what it is translating from your point of view: if everyone around you is speaking Spanish but you only know how to speak English, select English -> Spanish as the setting. To get your words translated, type /7 and your phrase: /7 Hello all! How is everybody? The translator will say on your behalf: Hola a todos! �C�mo est� todo el mundo? Unlike other popular translators, this device does *not* spam the chat channel with an insane amount of translations, making everybody around you furious! Instead, only *you* will get the translated string. The GUUD Universal Translator will add an extra line telling you who said what, and add the (translated) tag for your convenience. The HUD is huge, but clicking on the logo will turn it invisible! You just need to open it if you wish to switch languages. Known problems and limitations: - Not all language pairs are possible. Google really works hard at trying to add more language pairs, but not all will work. For instance, attempting to translate from Urdu to Sanskrit will fail with an "invalid translation language pair" message. Note that as Google adds new language pairs, these will be immediately active, you will not need to replace your GUUD Universal Translator! - In very laggy areas, the device might fail, or be too slow in translating *everybody* around you. This is mostly what happens to any script in a laggy area; although the GUUD Universal Translator is compiled into Mono for increased performance, it cannot do miracles. - Also remember that you have to be in a script-enabled area for this to work! - In some cases, the GUUD Universal Translator might get "confused" about which language pair is currently active, and start translating into the wrong language (not the ones shown on the HUD) or do nothing at all. The best way to deal with it is to detach and re-attach it again (it'll revert to the original translation pair). This is a known bug and will be fixed in a future version. - In some cases, Google returns some "garbage"; this comes from improper use of some encoded characters (most notably the use of the apostrophe in English). A workaround might be possible but is not planned. Note that to see non-Roman alphabets you might need to install some extra fonts on your computer (however, the translator will still work well for everybody around you!) - Phrases over 250 characters or so will be truncated. This is a limitation of the way Linden Lab designed their programming language and very likely will not change in the near future. A few workarounds are possible and might be available in a future release. So if someone copies and pastes a whole notecard on your screen, you're better off using Google Translation's own website for doing the whole translation for you! NOTE: Although Google translations are improving over time, this device is *not* a replacement for a native speaker! You might not realise how bad even the "best" translations are. In some cases � and for some cultures � the translator can even be pretty offensive for the native speakers around you; mostly, however, it will just be very funny for them :) Be patient, translation technology is not perfect and will never capture the intricacies of human language and communication. However, for simple phrases, it might be good enough for you. Don't depend on it for life-threatening emergencies, or for wooing your partner!
