“Don’t tell me the moon is shining, show me the glint of light on broken glass,” is great advice for writers. It is attributed to Anton Chekhov who did write something pretty close to that
. It remains good advice whether it is apocryphal or not. It basically tells writers to show, don’t tell. Of course, some writers go overboard and describe every single thing in such detail that they have left themselves no room for emotional honesty or plot, but in general, as a reader, I prefer showing to telling. It’s much easier with a picture, though, and in this one you can see the glint of moonlight on the waves.
Of course, what you really want is the perfect blend of show and tell. You don’t want authors telling you what every person is thinking, you want them to trust you to figure it out from their actions and their words. Writers who tell too much insult our intelligence, assuming we cannot get the point without it being spelled out.… Read the rest
Out of the darkness, fretted sometimes in its sleeping,
Jets of sparks in fountains of blue come leaping
To sight, revealing a secret, numberless secrets keeping.
Sometimes the darkness trapped within a wheel
Runs into speed like a dream, the blue of the steel
Showing the rocking darkness now a-reel.
And out of the invisible, streams of bright blue drops
Rain from the showery heavens, and bright blue crops
Surge from the under-dark to their ladder-tops.
And all the manifold blue and joyous eyes,
The rainbow arching over in the skies,
New sparks of wonder opening in surprise.
All these pure things come foam and spray of the sea
Of Darkness abundant, which shaken mysteriously,
Breaks into dazzle of living, as dolphins that leap from the sea
Of midnight shake it to fire, so the secret of death we se

With fashion, one plus one does not always equal two. For example, what I am wearing today combines two pieces from Liziaah into something new. I think the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. After all, there are three outfits, not two.
I was drawn to both the dress and the top from Liziaah. I noticed they both had similar embellishment, common in a collection where designers seek to find unifying elements. I though they might work together
I simply wore a dress two sizes smaller than the top. It would have been one size except there was a small amount of bleed through at the collar.
I went to Forgotten City. It will close next month, so make sure it is not forgotten by you and go visit this charming place before it leaves us forever.
I wore these fabulous shoes from Garbaggio that are at Collabor88 this month. I know I have worn them three times this month, but in different colors. The thing is, with classic shoes, they work so well so often.… Read the rest
Still round the corner there may wait, A new road or a secret gate….J.R.R.R. Tolkien
I stopped by Faster Pussycat today and saw that Honey Bender-Auer had opened a new store across the plaza called BENDER
. Featuring all original mesh and textures, it still has the rock superstar aesthetic that animates Faster Pussycat married to sleek and minimalist silhouettes. This Kyo dress was a must for me. I love how it echoes 18th century silhouettes that we are used to seeing in rich prints and maximal embellishment and here we see it in a solid silver, without visible seams or lines and not a trace of embellishment. It is a celebration of form and it is exquisite. I only have one quibble and it is minor. Since it is sleeveless it was not rigged to the arms or shoulders and so it is not very flexible when moving, It works well with most straightforward poses but if you raise your arms…well, just don’t do that. Thankfully, most of us do not run around SL with our arms raised.… Read the rest
Though my soul may set in darkness, it will rise in perfect light;
I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.
Most of us have an atavistic fear of the dark. It makes sense, many animals hunt at night. While we may hunt by day, at night we are the prey. I have always loved the dark, though. During the day, the lake I grew up on would be busy with people fishing and waterskiing. I have had more than one daytime close call with a speed boat driven by reckless people who never think to look for swimmers. I loved to swim in lake at night when the boats were silenced and sleeping, put to bed for fear of being run aground in the narrow lanes between the islands. While there might be a few hundred people on the lake during the day, at night I was often the only one. Of course, it was never quiet. There were the frogs, crickets, owls, timber wolves and best of all, the loons, all competing for lead vocals in the nightly concert.
We were in the country so the moon and stars reflected and refracted in the waves.… Read the rest
I hate it when I wake up suddenly in a strange place. Sometimes I’m unsure where I am and it can be quite confusing. I had a good three days at the beach, relaxing while my typist was away but it would’ve been perfect had not storms blown in on day two.
New lingerie at COLLABOR88 that perfectly fits my ISIS body from Belleza makes me a happy girl too. With nowhere to go, I’m quite content to just lounge about in it, doing nothing and saying less. The ARCADE is coming and I’m going to need to have all my strength about me to be ready for the stampede – yes these days away were just the thing.
I wouldn’t have minded some time in the sun, but restful is restful no matter where you are.
I need to start making lists when I get home. It’s going to be a good September, I can just feel it now!
