Rescued

My great-niece recently rescued a couple horses from a kill pen, the third generation of horse rescuers in my family. Kill pen horses are usually sold for pet food because they are considered problematic, untrainable, vicious and dangerous. They usually require a level of training most people just will not invest. In time, though, they can learn to trust and be trusted. If you want to see the evidence, see my great-grand niece cleaning this rescued horse’s hooves just two weeks into training…and the foundations for a fourth generation of rescuers begins. It was thinking about them, the work they are doing, and that two other nieces are doing, that I thought I might take this month’s house from Barnesworth for Collabor88 and set up a farm. I tinted it, one of the things I love about Barnesworth homes.  I live across the river from Gidge. Her house is in the background. Are you loving this wonderful dress from The Secret Store? I am, I particularly love the prints.… Read the rest“Some old-fashioned things like fresh air and sunshine are hard to beat.”

She turned to the sunlight and shook her yellow head, and whispered to her neighbor: “Winter is dead.”

I don’t even remember when I purchased Filter Forge®, the popular third-party companion to PhotoShop® that lets you apply fancy filters to your photos. It was long ago, maybe 2008 or 2009. Anyway, I don’t even use PhotoShop anymore as my laptop has no CD/DVD drive to allow me to install it. With materials, shadows, mesh bodies, and all the other controls we have over our raw shots, there’s no real need for PhotoShop either, except for the super fancy portraits with painted hair and so on. I still use Filter Forge from time to time for the fun of it. I just open photos directly in the software. Anyway, it’s 80% off today so I thought I would play with it and let you all know that it’s deeply discounted. Please note, that is an ordinary link with no clever code that gives me some compensation for promoting their software. I just have the basic package, the cheapest one, and it has everything I need. I don’t need to do pictures bigger than 3000 by 3000, so it’s enough for me.… Read the rest“She turned to the sunlight And shook her yellow head, And whispered to her neighbor: "Winter is dead.”

Fingers Crossed

Bento makes me happier than I thought it would. My happiness comes from things like these poses from Gingerfish that have Bento hand movements built right in. When Bento first came out, I was dubious, afraid that more complexity would strain my already struggling computer to the breaking point. I also moaned about one more thing to learn. I dawdled. I did not rush to buy bento hands immediately. I waited hoping it would all be figured out by someone else or even just go away. But it didn’t and both Slink and Maitreya released hands optimized for Bento and my computer did not fold over in a faint. So here we are. Animators are busy adapting and creating poses that capitalize on this new expressiveness and I am wondering why I was such a grouch about it. I guess I must be getting crotchety in my old SLage. I kind of fell in several sorts of love with the skirt and jacket from Emery. The Stella skirt has two options with a latte stripe or a pearl stripe. The Bastet jacket has bold lapels that give it a relaxed, casual air while being very fashion conscious.… Read the rest“You don't have to be a big name to do big things. Pink Makes Everything Pretty

Altair’s dress for Collabor88 is as flirty as it can be. It comes in a range of colors and with a HUD to change the colors of the bow and the ribbon at the babydoll waist and the hem. I chose pink because pink makes things pretty.  This dress is all about the legs.  Which makes it great for showing off gorgeous shoes.  Exile’s hair is great for showing off everything, including the lovely jewelry from Minimal and the fabulous Amaya skin from Glam Affair. **SHOPPING LIST******

If you’re going to do something tonight that you’ll be sorry for tomorrow morning, sleep late.

Henny Youngman once said, “If you’re going to do something tonight that you’ll be sorry for tomorrow morning, sleep late.” It makes me sort of want to see one of his routines. I kind of think this little romper might lead to doing things tonight…so I will sleep late. You can find your own in Birdy’s gacha at The Arcade. Be sure to sleep late.

Coming or going, it’s delightful.

The shoes are from Ingenue and available at The Arcade which opened today.

Can you believe I got the RED hair on the very first pull in Clawtooth’s gacha at The Arcade? I was thrilled. I also was pretty lucky with the Birdy gacha, not getting a pile of duplicates.

The rings are from Yummy and also at The Arcade. I love the intricate details. My skin is Glam Affair’s Chloe made for the new Chloe Bento head from Lelutka. Glam Affair released several eye and lip makeup appliers that are worth a deep dive. They are gorgeous. ****SHOPPING LIST******

Our imagination is the only true freedom we have.

Our imagination is the only true freedom we have. Before you decide that is depressing and melodramatic, consider this. What really impinges on our freedom more than anything? Is it the government or is it the mores and expectations of friends, family, and community? What stops us from pursuing our dreams, the police or our fears?  There are many things that hold us back, health, financial limitations, even time, but for those of us who live in a relatively free society, we are the ones who limit our freedom. As a white woman in the United States, I am relatively free of governmental repression. Of course, there are many cultural limits on women’s freedom and if some get their way, there will be governmental restrictions as well. But given the continuum of freedom in the world, I am comfortably situated on the relatively free section. I have been arrested a few times for my political activities and always released with an apology. For people who are not white, police encounters are more dangerous.… Read the restOur imagination is the only true freedom we have

Who Doesn’t Love Paddington?

So, when I saw ALT by TRUTH was releasing an item called Paddington, I was expecting a coat. Who wouldn’t? Thinking about it, though, a classic crew neck sweater and button down shirt is what Jonathan and Judy would have worn. They were very proper and tucked in their shirts, but who cares about that when such a gorgeous and versatile sweater, an investment set, is released. I really appreciate it when the creator notes what items work well under their mesh pieces. There is a color change hud that allows you to choose eleventy million (24) colors for the sweater and the shirt, plus a dozen prints and even three button colors. So, I wanted to wear a pencil skirt and tried on a few. I chose this one from Emery because the fabric is exactly right for this outfit. I adore these sandal pumps, they are very delicate but have the bold zipper going up the counter. Truth released this lovely hair style with the beautifully arranged curls. It’s called Delaney and a lovely casually chic style.… Read the rest“A feminist is anyone who recognizes the equality and full humanity of women and men.”

Folkloric

I always like to bust up sets and mix and match because it shows that the clothing people make in Second Life is more versatile than we think. For that reason, even though the Irina cropped sweater I am wearing from The Secret Store comes with a beautiful skirt that coordinates with it, I chose to wear a different skirt to show it can be done. Of course, you know and I know it can be done, but a reminder is useful.  And likewise, this gorgeous pleated skirt from ISON was released with a coordinating top with gorgeous embroider on the shoulders. I love these knife pleats. Every time I see them, I am reminded of this amazing fabric store I went to in Algeciras. I have been to larger ones since, but this one had the feeling of centuries of tradition. The building was incredibly old and there were shelves that went up nearly to the ceiling which was at least twenty feet high and rolling ladders to climb to reach the fabrics. Even the cash register must have been from the 19th century, covered with ornate leaves and flowers.  … Read the restalthough the actual image is clear enough, the interpretation is infinitely blurred, a sort of enormous rainbow of every possible color you could imagine

Stories & Folklore

The theme for Collabor88 this month is StoryTime and the creations showcased are a rich display of folkloric traditions and influences. There is a lot of embroidery, a lot of beautiful colors and rich traditional fabrics. Sissy Pessoa ran with the idea into a more modern direction with this gown and capelet. It has all the traditional flower forms, but the dress itself is quite modern and made even more so in the sheer version.
But sheer or opaque, it’s bold and beautiful. Both the dress and capelet come with the sheer or opaque options. With the sheer option, I can show off these gorgeous pumps from Ingenue that are also for Collabor88’s Storytime inspiration. Designer Betty Doyle’s display ad features the red pair because her inspiration was the somewhat grim Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale, The Red Shoes. Also at Collabor88, Phoenix released this Tiana hair, long and lush. The earrings are from Kungler’s, part of the January Cosmopolitan showcase.… Read the restWith freedom, books, flowers, and the moon, who could not be happy?

It’s Only Fashion Is Back

Our web site was down. Somehow there was a virus in the database. Is that not the strangest thing? I don’t know if that would affect readers or not, but thankfully it’s been fixed. I shot these pictures last week. I was still shocked by the Orwellian phrase “alternate facts” that in a healthy society would completely discredit the people who promote them. But, since people no longer distinguish between fact and opinion, alternate facts seem to be growing. Aldous Huxley, though, had the right idea. “Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored.” I fell in love with this lovely sweater from NYU for FaMESHed. It came with a gorgeous asymmetric skirt, too, but I wanted to show off the gorgeous ribbed waist line of the sweater and it tucked into the skirt. You can see the top and skirt together here. But look at that beautiful ribbing at the bottom…I had to find something to wear that showed it off. The Lesha trousers from Baiastice were perfect.… Read the restFacts do not cease to exist because they are ignored.

V for Victory

“When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it–always” Mahatma Gandhi
I am ready to resist, though if we’re marching, I have to change my shoes. Lizziah released a darling cropped sweater and skinny jeans, each in four colors. I confess cropped sweaters confuse me. Warming shoulders, chilly tummy. It’s gorgeous. Look at the details. The super-long sleeves, the ribbed band not the sweater, the sticking o the pockets. P.S. The V pose is from Gingerfish for Bento hands. I don’t have any yet and used Slink. The other poses are from aDorkable. Glamistry’s Azalea pumps are gorgeous. There is a HUD for all sorts of customization. I added this fun necklace from Mandala. The nails are from Flair. The Borg Loses in the End

Yesterday, three million women and men marched in every state and on every continent in the world. Every continent, even Antarctica. In 51° below Kotzebue, Alaska, people marched. In sunshine and rain storms, desert heat and arctic cold, people gathered to resist. Of course, the naysayers mocked and dismissed. “Resistance is futile,” they quote The Borg, an implicit confession of corruption. They forget, the Borg is destroyed in the end.
I adore this leggings from Vinyl. They are just perfection. The tank is from Zaara. Both are at Collabor88 this month. The shoes are from Ingenue. Of course, resistance is more than one march on one day. We know that. We don’t need to be mocked or disparaged for our success and our enthusiasm. We are not naive. We know that we must organize now, not just march. We must speak to our neighbors, our friends, and our family. We do not need to argue with the opposition. They are not ready to listen and may never be, but we outnumber them if we only act and if we vote.… Read the restThis, to me, is the ultimately heroic trait of ordinary people; they say no to the tyrant and they calmly take the consequences of this resistance. A Mind of Their Own

The damn lights have a mind of their own. I picked them up at Collabor88, the newest release from Maxi Gossamer and they just insist on going everywhere. They’re all in a tangle and I need to untangle them before I can decorate. Of course, if you’re decorating the outside of your house, you need a smoking hot coat like this one from Mutresse. It comes with a color-change HUD that is stuffed with 20 colors that you can use to customize the turtleneck sweater, the zips, the collar, the lapel, the pockets and the jacket body and bodice. Such control gives you exactly what you want. It, too, is at Collabor88.
I believe when I turn my head, the lights jump back into a tangle. Oh well, you can get a good look at my whole outfit, including the applier tights from Izzie’s. I chose the adorable booties from Glamistry. I was able to pick the colors from a HUD to customize it to go with my coat. Exile released this lovely updo at Collabor88. It’s called Class Act and it sure is a class act.… Read the restDon't worry about the smallest size that light can be, it will chase away the darkness

Hello Cold Weather

December is here and that means Christmas! and The Arcade! and it is up for debate which is more exciting. It’s so easy to go the red and green route for the holidays, but I resisted, buoyed by the gorgeous Camellia lights from {anc} over in the corner. I went for pinks and turquoises, think Miami meets Idaho. I liberally used the edit menu to tint my furnishings just a bit and even retexture a few things such as the runner on the side table. I know it’s a blend of modern and traditional that should clash, but it doesn’t. I think of Simon de Pury when I decorate, “Be bold, be brave, be amazing.” Why not mix modern settees with traditional cupboards and folk art and deco end tables? If you can make harmony of contradiction, then it’s not just bold, it is amazing. Speaking of amazing, I love the Bauwerk Dall, a carved deer with exaggerated legs and a sleek, minimalist form. I placed several deer statues in the house, they are such beautiful animals.… Read the restHello Cold Days

To fly we have to have resistance

Resistance is not futile. Resistance gives flight to hope and defies despair. Resistance reminds us that we are a better nation when we embrace social and racial justice. While the arc of history just got a big kink in its bend toward justice, it still bends. We have lived experience that gay rights, women’s rights, civil rights and human rights are empowering, not weakening our country. They cannot erase that knowledge, the lived experience of Americans who saw that gay rights bring joy, that trans liberation brings freedom, that women’s rights brings advancement, that immigrant rights bring progress, and that human rights bring progress. They can try to take away those rights, but the living experience of our people prove their crabbed and cruel vision of the future is a lie. We will prevail in the long run. They are on the wrong side of history which is why even their temporary victory fills them with rage instead of celebration. Meanwhile, we can still enjoy life…and fashion.… Read the restTo fly we have to have resistance

Such a Nasty Woman

It is Election Day at long last. Elections in America are far too long and of course, the campaigns in the commentariat are even longer. After all, there’s already speculation and talk about 2020 before 2016 is decided, because the media would rather talk horse races than policy. This is the first truly existential election since 1860. People who complain that the election is not about issues this year are wrong. It’s just that the issues on the ballot are not the issues we are used to voting on—whether we are a free country or an authoritarian one, whether the United States controls it foreign policy or follows the dictates of a former KGB agent, and whether we want to continue as a democratic republic or are ready to just give it all up and hand it over to a despot. Thwse are the issues of this election and they could not be more important. I am wearing suffragette white even though I voted two weeks ago. I am excited to be electing the first woman president.… Read the restSuch a Nasty Woman

Apply Yourself

This Verushka dress from Liziaah is striking in its details – all very architectural and rigid, but intricate and complex – a baroque form of modernism. It is also unusual in its construction. With the advent of mesh, we have lost the old form of system layers and while we often use appliers for lingerie or layering, there are few people making clothing using appliers and mesh pieces. Liziaah is one of those few. This dress is applied and the dreaded flap for the skirt is added, however, since this is mesh, not prim, it has not of the flaws of past. It conforms to movement, it reacts to the light the same as the applied textures. In the end, it makes a beautiful dress that is form-fitting in ways that mesh cannot achieve.

Verousha is a form-fitting dress with a corset-like top and a pencil skirt. The sheer neckline is embellished with a mesh neck corset embellished with pearls and feathers. The laces and chains in the Hyacinth shoes from Glamistry echo design elements in the dress.… Read the restNature is the inspiration for all ornamentation.

Everything is fair in love, war, and fashion.

Distance lends discretion, so I am beginning my post with a full body shot instead of the usual three-quarter photo I usually use. My blouse is a bit sheer and revealing and so closer, more detailed photos are below the cut on behalf of those who might be taking a peek while at work. I am repurposing a lovely lingerie bodysuit from Luxuria because as Reiss Field once said, “Everything is fair in love, war, and fashion.”

Luxuria released a long-sleeved bodysuit applier at Romp. The Leanna Bodysuit has a décolletage that drops down to the waist. I paired it with a gorgeous, flirty skirt from NYU. Here you can see the beautiful lace detail that makes the bodysuit so gorgeous. It comes in several colors. I love the subtlety of the color taupe and made it the theme of my outfit, bringing in a soft blush to add contrast with the jacket and handbag. The jacket was a Christmas gift from Lelutka last year. The handbag is from Rowne and beautifully made. I love handbags and have a crazy number of them in RL, but far fewer in SL.… Read the restEverything is Fair in Love, War and Fashion. - Reiss Field

The more you leave out, the more you highlight what you leave in.

Henry Green was talking about editing and writing when he said, “The more you leave out, the more you highlight what you leave in.” The truth of that statement, though, applies to fashion as well as writing or any other kind of art. That is why I enjoy wonderfully restrained minimalist design like you get from ISON & Rowne. These pieces are from a showcase collection that will be taken off the market after September 30th, so go to ISON as soon as you can. What was left out? There is no fussy fastening where the skirt fastens on right hand side. Incidentally, most wrap skirts fasten on the left, so even that was a design decision. An important element in its design are the French seams, that highlight the close-fitting form of the skirt. With simplicity, we see the beauty of the fabric, uninterrupted by distractions. It is the same with the blouse. The simple drape and cuff of the sleeves on the blouse and the unadorned keyhole closure that drops deep and draws attention to the bodice, but without a fussy pussy bow.… Read the rest“The more you leave out, the more you highlight what you leave in.”
