First frost

Fall is drawing to an end with curtains of slowly spreading icy frost, leaving a silvery shell over every blade of grass and window pane, making every footstep across the lawn crackle.  A chilly morning lent inspiration to this outfit, as well as some gorgeous releases from ever so talented designers. The creator of I Love Olive, one of my all time favorite hair stores in SL recently returned to SL with a whole big bundle of ideas and new releases and the new Poetic hair was what really inspired me to do this outfit – I just had to make something to compliment the flowing yet still sculpted look of it, the way it slides over the shoulders yet still has adorably punk asymetrical bangs. It’s really a shame Skintimate doesn’t do more dark skins or I would wear them more often, as this special skin they released last month really shows the potential.  I adore the little sparkles around the eyes and the glittery, playful vibe this gives off.  It’s a great compliment to Ibanez Eyes’ new release, a series of more watery feeling eyes with a smooth surface and piercing gaze.… Read the rest

Newbie Challenge, Pt 2

Meet Audry, all grown up (and in a new skin color)! One observation I had while perusing the marketplace for items was that the horribly slutty, ass and boob-baring clothing way outnumbered the amount of half decent clothing in the 0 – 10L range.  This is likely why we have so many newbies going around dressed like they just came out of a reject porn film. I broke my rules slightly here and got a sale-priced hair at an event.  I wasn’t planning on doing this but the options for good, cheap hair, especially on the Marketplace, are so subpar that I didn’t want to ruin the whole outfit with one ugly hair.  Collabor88 is an ongoing event often with some of the same designers from month to month so it wasn’t too huge of a cheat, especially since Clawtooth is there nearly every month. Heartsick is my absolute favorite place for skins these days.  They’re always fairly cheap, but I was thrilled to find out that their group, which often gives out freebies of new skins, was free to join! … Read the rest

Newbie Challenge, Pt 1

Over the weekend, Gogolita of JuicyBomb issued a challenge to all fashion bloggers: Create an avatar from scratch with only $L550, the minimum amount of linden dollars it’s possible to buy. I took up this challenge in two parts.  Part one, create a child avatar with this amount to show that being new is no excuse for an ugly avatar and it’s possible to become a kid without breaking the bank. I decided to not rely heavily on one-day sale items in my creations and instead went with normally cheap items and those on longer promos.  Finding an item cheap on a single sale is easy, but finding deals which newbies can really use is far better. Meet Audry: I kind of wish I had heard of Savior Hair when I was new to the grid.  It’s a little outlet store with hair from several large stores as freebies or dollarbies, including Tiny Bird, Sirena, and the one I’m wearing from Posh.  This style came in two freebie colors, blonde and dark brown.  The hat isn’t color change, but I can overlook that for the sheer quality vs.… Read the rest

Adam n’ Eve’s Lovechild

Sachi Vixen of Adam n’ Eve is an awesome designer, good enough to be featured in the Linden Lab Library folder of every resident in SL.  Yep, she’s the one you can blame for the Girl Next Door (AKA Ruth in pink), who often pops up at the most inopportune times.  Fortunately her designs abilities have fully evolved over the years and she’s become a prolific designer, well known for some awesomely realistic avatar skins and clothing.  Her most recent skin release is aimed at a much different population than the previous ones: Child avatars. Adam n’ Eve’s new kid skin line is called the Pixie series, and comes in two distinct tones, with three shades in each: Hallie, which is a Caucasian skin, and Aisha, which is an African/Hispanic skin.  Each skin shade costs $L1,000.  The release also features kid roleplay tattoo layers which can be bought separately for $L50 each: Cheek dirt and a milk mustache. I was lucky enough to be passed a sample of the middle Aisha skin, Chocolate. … Read the rest

Sisters…  They steal your clothes, they get you in trouble, they mess with your stuff, yet they’re your best friends. Okay, I guess here I’m my own best friend – meet Juniper, my new kid avatar.  I took a good long think about my SL and decided that I can accommodate two regular avatars without driving myself crazy.  I’m kind of amazed at how my SL has changed over the past year, but it feels right.  This is the direction I should be headed in. Why I’m not meshing with mesh (yet)

On 29th September 2011 · By arwynquandry · With Leave a comment

Mesh. That’s the big word on the lips of so many bloggers right now.  The technology, the designs, the etiquette of using it in different situations, the people banning it from their sims – mesh is a hot topic, and I have been listening. There are some pretty cool mesh based items out there and I’ve received a few of them.  Unfortunately they are currently sitting in my inventory, boxed.  This isn’t because I don’t want to open them and try them out, but because I’m just not ready for it yet.  My computer could run a mesh viewer easily enough, I don’t lag much in SL and have decent graphics.  The thing holding me back right now is stability. At first I said I would adopt mesh as soon as Firestorm, the only viewer I really use, updated to include it.  The update came and I still didn’t download it after reports that it was more unstable than the Viewer 3 which LL put out.  I just can’t see downloading a viewer which will drive me crazy for such a limited purpose.… Read the rest

Name change!

It’s been over two years now since I’ve left Teen Second Life.  In those two years I’ve explored a wide span of what Second Life proper offers, found friends and lost them, gained a new identity and then changed that over again.  In this span of time I have really transitioned over from TSL.  While my roots grow from there, they’ve spread across the grid and I’ve found new homes everywhere. I started this blog as Transmissions from TSL, a blog to show the rest of the virtual world the little-known side of Second Life, what the teen grid was like.  I left and became Transitions from TSL, my exporation of my post-teen identity.  Now, having seen and heard quite a bit more in the past two years, I am done transitioning and will now be known as Second by Second. With this name change will also come a domain change.  I know I’ve said this before, but this time it’s for real.  My new location isn’t ready to be unveiled yet, but I soon will be redirecting this domain to a new place with my own hosting and a new layout. … Read the rest

Finishing off the summer

On 19th August 2011 · By arwynquandry · With Leave a comment

Unfortunately the summer is drawing to a close.  Soon the days of beaching in a barely-there bikini will be gone, replaced by ever-thickening coats and covering up.  It’s time for one last hurrah of beachwear before it is shoved to the bottom of my inventory, only to peek out when I’m tired of the constant snow and grey days. I wasn’t sure what to think of this skin from JeSyLiLo at first.  It said it was dark, but it wasn’t as dark as I normally go.  I was ready to reject it and go back to my normal darkness when I realized how well made it was and the level of detail it had.  That was enough to drive me out of my comfort zone and use it for an outfit.  I paired it with a new eyeshadow color from a.e. meth and lipstick from Garage which perfectly fit the face style and brought in a nice splash of color. Style Info: Skin: *JeSyLiLo* – Niran *DarkSkin* (in J4*BT)

Display names just can’t cut it

It was only a matter of time before a JIRA emerged to petition the removal of last names from the Second Life new account creation system.  The option to have a surname was removed almost a year ago, making it so every new account created would be stuck with the last name of Resident. This was fine, said Linden Lab, because they were also introducing Display Names, the ability to change what your name appears to be in-world and modify your identity.  Display names themselves set off a panic because of the exploitability of them – after all, anyone could start calling themselves anyone else and residents feared it would lead to widespread impersonation issues.  Despite objections, LL went ahead as they always do and introduced the changes.  Then, for a time, things were quiet. A year later we’re able to see that display names just don’t cut it as substitutes for having a first and last name in Second Life.  For one, if someone isn’t using a viewer with display names or doesn’t have them enabled in their viewer, they don’t matter. … Read the rest

When GE meets BTB

On 28th June 2011 · By arwynquandry · With Leave a comment

With every release of a new Gorean novel, roleplayers and lifestylers alike are forced to recognize something: the current novels are not the be all and end all of everything in Gor. Even John Norman himself is making it up as he goes along, inventing new cultures, fruits, characters and styles. With each new release, we have to embrace a new aspect of the books which didn’t exist last year and to figure out how to incorporate it into our roleplaying styles or lives. This is where I think BTB roleplaying falls flat on it’s face in a pile of bosk dung. BTB Gor has a hard time acknowledging that it doesn’t know everything. It has trouble integrating new concepts and dealing with the fact that it exists on the ever changing plain of modern authorship. With BTB Gor, Norman’s word is everything. If it’s not in the books, it can’t happen. Yet John Norman is just an average guy who happens to be the author, which means that maybe tossing in a few possibilities which weren’t in the books might be okay, as long as we don’t overdo it.… Read the rest

Haters Gonna Hate, or Bullying in my SL

I usually don’t bring up my little fights on my blog.  Normally I find that distasteful because I don’t run a drama blog.  However, last night an issue very close to my heart was touched and caused me a lot of pain. As many of you know, I play both an adult and child avatar on one account.  My picks are filled with everything from descriptions of my roleplay characters, to quotes, to my favorite places to visit, and though I hide my groups, I’m very open about what my SL is all about. Last night I had forgotten to take off my group tag, as I often do.  I went into kid form to hang out with my mom for a while, when some other people came up.  One person questioned my tag, and then looked at my profile.  Moments later, she was screaming at me for how disgusting I am because I’m a child and an adult and saying she’d never let her kids near me. Normally I can easily shrug things like this off, but for some reason it hurt me more than usual.  A friend of mine told me a few months ago that someone had given him shit because I played a child avatar. … Read the rest

What’s your digits?

Strawberry Singh started this new trend in the SL fashion world.: you take a picture of yourself in your favorite shape and then post it with some of your shape info.  Some of you might know that making shapes is a hobby of mine (though I’ll admit I’m not very good at it), so this totally appealed to me.  However, it made me think.  I spend so much time as a kid these days, why not also do that shape as well?  No one said you can’t and I did see a few non-traditional shapes like furries, so I took the initiative and made these inner looks at my shapes.
