Blooming

It was all the rage back when Emma Gilmour of Sand Shack Surf Co. released her Bloom Doll avatars.
I love Blythe dolls and quickly fell for the Second Life version. But I never wore it, not once, because it always hard for me to wear an avatar other than the virtual extension of myself I had created. My furry experiment in November shook me out of that. After spending December in my Golden Years and January in a variety of human avatars, I figured it was time for Bloom to come out and play. Bloom dolls use a regular human body shape and skin (included) and a big, prim head with a script for changing the eyes, lids, and lashes. Regular clothes require no more adjustment than any other standard human avatar, but the large prim head means you have to resize hair and, of course, hairbase textures can’t go on it. I must be feeling a little nostalgic because I also pulled out this shirt from Tiny Bird, a favorite store that’s no longer around. Credits Read the restSecond Life

In Black and White

I found Not Everything is Plain Black and White in the Destination Guide. I went there wearing this cute red mesh dress, but found a few free goodies there – some black and white avatars and clothes to help you become part of this cool art installation. I had some editing-fun with these photos. Credits Other black and white skins and outfits are courtesy of Not Everything is Plain Black & White.

Here’s a sweet and playful look put together with the help of Mother Goose’s. It’s hard to beat the big wall of Lucky Boards for free skins at Mother Goose’s and they’re perfect if you like a look that’s younger and not so model perfect.

Etta James Tribute

Acclaimed blues and R&B diva Etta James passed away Friday. Adan n Eve released a wonderful tribute shape and skin this weekend. I prefer my own shape, however, so I let it inspire me, but ultimately went with my own shape for these images.

If you’re not familiar with the music of Etta James, you don’t know what you’ve been missing! Credits

Sporty

I love the mole on this skin. It’s such a nice detail. While I was exploring the Grid for a sporty place to snap a photo for this entry, I happened on TT Enterprises. This is a great place to go if you’re looking for something to do with friends or on a date. The complex offers basketball, tennis, ping pong, and beach volleyball.

Party Girl

I don’t tend to go for party looks in Second Life, but sometimes you gotta let your hair down and hit a club.

This striped, sheer dress is a great find in the Marketplace. The pack also brings an orange version. I was tempted to edit the straps around the shoulder areas, but this is a Second Life issue with the body mesh so I decided to leave it. Credits

SOPA / PIPA Blackout

On January 18 many websites, including Reddit and Boing Boing, are going dark in protest of SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act), two dangerous bills that would dramatically alter the internet landscape and create a punishing censorship regime in ill-attempts at stopping copyright infringement.

To learn more, watch the video below. Second Mode will go on strike January 18 from 8am to 8pm EST in support of the SOPA/PIPA Blackout. For more information about SOPA/PIPA and what you can do to stop it, please visit these sites: H.R.3261 – Stop Online Piracy Act S.968 – PROTECT IP Act of 2011 Could SOPA Strangle Second Life? In my regular human avatar, I’m very attached to my shape and skin. One of the fun aspects of blogging freebies exclusively is changing it all up just putting on the great free items you find. I love this look, which is nothing like my real or usual virtual self.

Shape Up

On 9th January 2012 · By Jupiter Firelyte · With Leave a comment

One of the best freebies in Second Life is the avatar shape. You may opt to buy one and you can certainly find many designer free ones, but I recommend making your own. Unfortunately, many designers make poor shapes that are badly out of scale and proportion. I’ve picked up a number of free shapes over the last few days, but gave up on them and created my own. Armed with these free tools and this tutorial, you can make a unique and well-proportioned avatar in just a couple of hours.

Awesome Blossom Closing

On 6th January 2012 · By Cosette · With Leave a comment

Another wonderful store, Awesome Blossom, is closing. According to the store’s blog:
Starting January 1 and running through January 15th, everything in the entire store is 50% OFF! That includes prefabs too! After January 15th my items will still be available on the Market Place at their regular prices. If I ever do get the building bug I will release items there and some might even show up for FREE so make sure you stay in the Update Group, or join it if you aren’t in it already, so you’ll know when that happens! There are group joiner signs located at the front of the Awesome Blossom mainstore. And finally, while I am closing my store, I am NOT leaving SL completely. I am however looking forward to the relaxing side of SL once again. Thank you again for all of your support and remember… All is full of awesome!
Thank you, Awesome Blossom, and best of luck!

2011 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog. Here’s an excerpt:
A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 1,600 times in 2011. If it were a cable car, it would take about 27 trips to carry that many people.
Click here to see the complete report. Pretty darn good for a blog that’s only about two months old. Yay me! And yay you! Thank you for reading.

Fab Free in the New Year

On 3rd January 2012 · By Jupiter Firelyte · With Leave a comment

There are a some myths out there about money and Second Life. One is that it’s impossible to enjoy Second Life without spending real-life money. Another is that buying items in Second Life is stupid because it’s not real, it’s digital, or just a hobby.

When it comes to money in Second Life, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, much of the content is user-created. Second Life residents spend a lot of time and energy creating beautiful things and, if you want one of their items, they deserve to be paid. You wouldn’t step into the shoe department at Macy’s and demand those Steve Madden pumps for free and, if you’re a law-abiding citizen, you’re paying for your digital music, movies, and video games. Second, we’re not talking a lot of money. For about the cost of a Grande Peppermint Mocha from Starbucks, you can get over a thousand lindens (Second Life currency) and that buys you quite a lot. Third, it’s natural to spend money on the things we enjoy and get value from.… Read the restSecond Life

Happy New Year’s Eve

On 31st December 2011 · By Cosette · With Leave a comment

This is my last day spending my Second Life in my Golden Years. It’s been fun though, truth be told, my experience wasn’t that different. A couple of people said I looked cute or that it was refreshing to see, and asked where the avatar is from. Much like my time spent as a furry, there was no harassment or other unpleasant incidents or attitudes. I hope your time in Second Life has been as pleasant as mine.

In 2011, I moved in and out of New Toulouse Bayou and had a wonderful time there, explored a lot of mainland, learned about land when I moved out of my Linden Home, learned more about scale and proportion and gave my avatar a shape makeover, moved my blog from its initial home at Tumblr to its current WordPress home, and am happy to find myself included in a few Second Life fashion feeds and recently in Hypergrid Business. We saw a lot of changes in Second Life this year including the release of Firestorm from the makers of the popular Phoenix viewer and a new version of the official viewer, an increase in the number of groups we can belong to, the deployment of mesh, the expansion of premium membership benefits, and Linden Realms.… Read the restSecond Life

Second Life is Not a Game

On 30th December 2011 · By Jupiter Firelyte · With Leave a comment

One of my teeny tiny pet peeves is when people harp about Second Life being a game. This is often followed by declarations that games should not be taken seriously. Therefore, Second Life should not be taken seriously. I wrote in another blog that despite certain statistics about the web and other things geek… …Second Life crosses some kind of nerd line. Putting the benefits of play, such as learning, teamwork, relaxation, and therapy, aside, there’s a lot more going on in Second Life than playing. I opened the Search and the Destination Guide and decided to check out some other ways in which Second Life is being used.… Read the restSecond Life
