"Roberts" Leather Tricorn

I was looking through some of my project folders recently and realized that I had very nearly finished another hat for Fantasy Faire, but had never gotten around to releasing it! So in this long sea of inactivity, here's a little island of distraction for you to enjoy.

The "Roberts" leather tricorn is a hat for the most dreaded of pirates.  Or those that simply want a durable and utilitarian hat that's stylish and rugged.  It comes in a variety of tones, from raw leather to dark tanned and of course the usual black and white, and it also works with the Octopoda pin.

You can find it out now at my (not so temporary at this point) store on The Twilight

And on the marketplace:

When I look at my store I realize there are themes that I always revisit. I love masks, I love hats, I love jewelry and I love piratey things. Most of these things have seen some love from me in mesh, but as you well know, one of these things has seen a glaring omission. It was about time for another round of awesome pirate hats.

"Chauncey" is a highly customizable felt tricorner hat with elegant ruffled trim and cording.  Both the ruffles and the cording can be set to invisible, so you can have just the plain felt hat, or a felt hat with cording and no ruffles or whatever configuration you like.  There are twelve felt hat colors, as well as eleven satin ruffle colors that match the felt and four trim colors (gold, silver, black, and white).

However, I think it needs a bit more flair...

Octopoda is the perfect pirate's accessory.  It's the result of many hours of delicate detail work which was honestly really fun.  I loved modeling the curling tentacles, the delicate baroque frame, all of the designing and modeling went really smoothly for it and it's been a very long time since something was this fun to work on.  I think you can see it in just how detailed it is, if you scale it up to some ridiculous size only then do you see all of the work I put into it.  Even small, though, it makes a perfect pendant for a pirate.  It also comes with a brooch option, which by default fits to your tricorn, but you can put on your chest if you'd rather ha (Read more...)

Silumira Necklace

A while ago I needed a break from working on architecture, so I went for something fun, inspired by classical Elven jewelry you see in movies like Lord of the Rings and in all sorts of fantasy art. I was aiming for that lovely cross between Elven and Celtic, using my favorite thing of course: swirls.

I wasn't sure at the time if I was going to add anything to it, a headpiece or earrings or something, but I could sit on it for potentially months while wondering what to add to it. So, I might as well just release it for Fantasy Faire and let folks enjoy it while I wonder those things.

Silumira, since I'm a nerd and actually looked this up, means "shining stone" in Quenya, the Elvish language of LotR. Sort of.  I looked up the words for "shining" and "stone" and put them together.  I don't know, I don't speak Quenya.

Illusions @ Fantasy Faire 2015

I know it's been a while, but I'm alive and still been working on the new sim off-and-on.  I won't go into details but there was a lot of RL stuff that made working impossible or incredibly slow.  But I knew I couldn't miss Fantasy Faire, so in the month or so leading up to Fantasy Faire I got a chance to do some work on something other than architecture.

Illusions can be found on the magical Ichi-go Ichi-e sim, built and sponsored by the talented folks behind The Looking Glass.  For the most part, there are familiar items out, however, there are and will be a few new things up.

For Relay For Life, I decided to put up a couple of masks that were formerly event exclusives to my Unseelie Ball and Luminous Masquerade.  I hope no one has any objections, since it's for charity and will only be available for the duration of Fantasy Faire.

The Lunaria mask has a tintable glow layer that allows you to customize it, and both masks are unisex and able to be stretched and fit to your avi's face whether you're male or female.  They're unscripted, but modifiable.… Read the rest

Work on the sim has been irregular, I had an unfortunate spat of "I hate everything!" and tore stuff up to redo and then got overwhelmed and then collapsed with some ice cream so I said to myself... Let's take a break.

We Heart Roleplay is a nice way to get me out of my funk and keep me making something new even when everything is telling me "you know, you should be working on your sim right now" and I can say "no!  I signed up for this so I get to work on something fun!"

Jewelry is a nice compromise between working on something that needs to be done ASAP and yet I can't stand to work on, and doing something new, because by its nature it has a limit to the scale of the project.  I can't get stuck on it or carried away too far so it's nice to have something that's relatively "easy" time wise.  People have asked for more jewelry using my new stones, so I'm happy to oblige.  So for this month's We Heart Roleplay I've put out a new pendant I've called Nara.

While looking for elven jewelry for inspiration I came across a talented Deviant Artist named Drakonaria.… Read the rest

I'm working hard on the new sim, and I hope to have an update about that soon.  In the meantime, I got into We ♥ Roleplay for June. Since I needed something new, it gave me the opportunity to make a variation on the Joker and Jolli I had planned since the start.  When I originally made them, I had wanted to make a "musica" version as well.

They look so sinister with the eyes hidden, which is one of the things I love about them!  That's an option you can toggle on and off with the other Joker and Jolli masks as well, and it adds a certain mystique to them.

They're currently only available at We ♥ Roleplay, and for 25% off of their price!  You can pick them up for 400L each, and they include my usual metallic selection of colors which includes sterling, antiqued and tarnished silver, and bronze, copper and gold.

It's been ages, but remember my Mardi Gras Masquerade? I've been sitting on my event masks for that party, working on colors and tweaking them mercilessly.

I like to do traditional Venetian masks for Mardi Gras, and this is no exception.  This year, I decided to do Joker and Jolli masks!

The jester motif is a popular one amongst mask makers.  It's playful, ornate, and beautiful but irreverent.  It's based on the medieval tradition, the crest emulating the classic "ass's ears" hats of jesters.  They often have a chin piece as well that emulates a pointed collar, however I felt it would be awkward when actually worn by an avatar so I didn't bother.

The male version was a pain in the ass's ears!  I completely remade this guy from the ground up after the party.  I had a lot of trouble balancing the exaggeration and stylization I wanted with my natural instinct to try and make things more realistic and flattering.  The first mask I didn't take far enough, and some other pieces that ended up on the chopping block went too far.  This, I feel, is a good balance.  I wanted it to be sly, mischievous, almost evoking a goblin.… Read the rest

Illusions @ Fantasy Faire 2014

It's that time of year again!
Fantasy Faire is open!

This year, Illusions can be found on the astoundingly beautiful Sanctum sim by Alia Baroque.  I specifically requested to be moved here and made sure it happened because when I saw a preview of the sim build it felt just like home!

Columns? Arches? Cathedral ceilings and beautiful stone edifices?  Where else would I be!  Alia has really outdone himself and done a beautiful job.  If the other sims are as lovely as this I can't wait to explore.   I've been holed up working last minute on things and haven't gotten a chance to look around.

For RFL, I've put out a special metallic version of my Alato mask in gold as well as silver.  They'll only be available for a limited time during Fantasy Faire, and all proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.  They're only 95L, so you have no excuses not to nab one!

I hope if you find yourself the time you'll come join us at the fair, and if you end up on Sanctum come find my store!… Read the rest

Carnivale will be closing May 15th

I have found a buyer for Carnivale.  I'm both excited and sad to share this news with you, as it makes the closure of the sim solid reality.  I'm pleased with the deal we've struck though, and I can tell you that it's going to a kind person who agreed to my terms and who is a fan of my work.  The build will be cleared with the transfer, but it gives me comfort at least to know that it wasn't going to a a "Rockefellian" land baron.

The official date of the transfer is May 15th.  On that day, Carnivale will be closed, moved and transferred to its new owner.  In the meantime, I'd like to announce the Goodbye Carnivale Contest.

The rules are simple: take a picture or series of pictures on Carnivale.  They can have a theme or not, they can be of people or not, but they have to showcase the build of Carnivale. The only other rule is nothing sexually explicit as the sim is rated G.  Beyond that, your imagination is the only limit.

What's your favorite place on the sim?  Where did you used to love to sit with your friends?  Where did you like to be while you shopped in the marketplace or wandered the halls?  Where is your favorite memory?… Read the rest

About Carnivale

In Illusions, Second Life
Back in 2007, I had an honest to goodness patron of my work.  An extremely wealthy fan who loved my masks, gave me commissions, and even bought a sim to give me free reign of.  For a while I had fun on my completely rent free section of Second Life and I delighted in running rampant with it. However, after a year or so that patron left Second Life, and left me the sim.  Since then, I've been paying upkeep that I can't really afford and trying to use rentals in order to help out with the cost.

Things I've learned about myself are:

• I am too much of a softie with my friends to actually enforce rent
• I am too absent minded to keep track of who's renting when and for how long or how much they've paid, even with a rental system
• I am too lazy to keep an entire full size sim up to date with a build that suits my vision for it

Simply put, I'm not getting $295 USD a month worth of value out of it, and the pressure to do so is not something I want to deal with anymore.

After letting my friends know about this, the wonderful Kala Bijoux stepped up and offered me a place on her grandfathered tier sim called the Winged Isle.  I wasn't sure if I wanted to take it, since I know I'm a bit of a control freak and I didn't want to step on her toes, but she has promised me full creative control and is even open to changing the name to fit our new vision of it.  My new costs for maintaining my store would be a mere fraction of the former and I would still have contr (Read more...)

Alato Mask

After the Luminous Masquerade I had some people asking whether or not I was going to sell the mask I gave out as a party favor.  I usually don't, to keep the masks unique, but I really liked the shape so I decided to revisit it and turn it into a simpler, classic and versatile mask.

Alato means "winged" in Italian, but of course when I read it I keep reading "a lot o'" mask, heh.  However, the name suits the shape.  The points coming down the cheeks are flattering on both men and women, and I went for a soft, gritty metallic look with the texture, with muted colors.

This is actually the first mask I've made utilizing the specular and normal maps,  and I love the detail and effect they add.  My items from now on will be using them, so that's something to look forward to!

Mardi Gras Masquerade 2014 (Aftermath)

If you didn't manage to make it on Saturday, I forgive you.  After being gone for so long I was kind of surprised anybody came at all.  But I was happy to be in good company with so many old friends and some new faces!

Freyja Nemeth and Ran Garrigus

Darlingmonster Ember
Cayenne Republic rocking two amazing outfits

Of course I played some of my favorite swing and big band songs and we all danced and chatted the night away.  And after dancing and admiring the beautiful costumes, the king and queen of Mardi Gras were chosen for this year: Panarroway and Ravenna Soothsayer.

Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to grab a picture of them together in their prizes, so the event mask will have to be a surprise!  Don't worry, I'm working on it. I need to work my magic and finish up some details before I'm willing to share.

Happy Mardi Gras!  Or Pancake Tuesday, however you want to look at it.  Today I had pancakes while wearing a mask so there's no reason you can't celebrate both.  Today is the actual day of Mardi Gras but of course I'll be celebrating with you guys on the 15th

To ease back into working after my absence (which I do owe you an explanation for and will probably write something up later) while not having a huge project with potential to run away with me, I browsed through my inspiration folder and found a simple and elegant mask in the musica tradition of Venetian mask making.

There's a tradition in Venice of making some masks with old sheet music.  Very often it's Italian opera, perhaps because it's romantic.  Personally, I think it's because if you're making masks out of paper anyway you might as well make it pretty paper.  But in any case, it was high time that I made my own "musica" mask.

I love the baroque look of so many detailed curls and swirls, here I used some PS brushes turned alpha by the talented Coy Dreamer, whose work I also used in my Volto Altezza and Altezzoso masks.  But, I also love the three-dimensional look of my usual curlicues and sculpted filigree that I think I've become known for.  With this mask, I tried to marry the two so they could blend together to compliment and enhance each other.  Plus, it lets me add stones!

Mardi Gras Masquerade 2014

With winter starting to decline, animals start to come out of their holes and so, too, am I.  Let's get through the remaining cold with a party, yes?

Mardi Gras is this Tuesday, but I hope you'll forgive a bit of flexibility when it comes to the date.

You're invited to the Illusions seventh annual Mardi Gras masquerade.  It should be my eighth, but regretfully last year I didn't hold one.  We'll just have to make up for it this year!

As with all of my masquerades, there will be a vote to decide the King and Queen of Carnivale and the winners will receive a pair of new, unreleased event masks and 1500L gift cards!  Even if you're not planning on trying for the costume contest, at least come for the free mask: the one shown in the invite will be available for all of the attendees.  Oh, and of course come for the music!

The theme is more formal, so think Venice rather than Rio, but beyond that let your imagination soar.  If you're not sure where to begin, purple, green and gold are a good start!… Read the rest

I love animal skulls. I think they have a very grisly appeal, with interesting lines, places for the eye to explore and complexity without being overwhelming.  One of my projects to practice mesh was to create a deer skull because of the complexity of the shape and simply how impractical it would have been to do nicely in sculpts.

It lay around unfinished for a while, until my Halloween masquerade started to loom on my calendar.  It seemed like the perfect time to take it out, dust it off and finish it properly.  After I did the high definition version and settled on a final shape, I wanted to add a little something more.  Since my masquerade was themed for glowing in the dark, I had to add something that glowed!  I spent some time carefully decorating it and the antlers with some kickass tribal paint:

Eikthirnir (Eikþyrnir) is the name of the stag that lived on top of Valhalla in Norse mythology, eating the leaves of Yggsdrasil.  It means "old thorny" and from its antlers all river waters were said to spring.  Maybe it's not the perfect name for a deer skull mask, but I've already used all of the cool genus names on antlers.  In any case, my paint designs don't feel completely out of place in my vision of an ancient Nordic deer skull.  The skull and the antlers are actually two separate pieces, so if you want you can simply wear the mask and match it with any of my other antlers (they might not meet up perfectly with the sku (Read more...)

The Luminous Masque 2013 (Aftermath)

The sun has dawned once more and the creatures of the dark have retreated.  Another marvelous masquerade has passed and I'm so thankful to those of you who came to join me and dance with me.

The company of dancers was a spectacle to behold, lighting up the darkened dance floor with their lambent lights.  Two dancers had to be chosen as the most effulgent of them all however, and so the vote was held.

After a very tense and close vote the winners of the costume contest were the radiant Kaelis Ember and effervescent Ran Garrigus.  The prize that you see them wearing is a new mask I've been working on, the skull of a deer adorned with luminous paint.  Normally I do a male and female version of the mask but that would involve one version not having antlers, and I just couldn't force myself to make that sacrifice!

My outfit for the masquerade, with modified pieces by Deviance, Ni.Ju, Schadenfreude, Gauze and ChaoticSpire
Don't worry, the mask will be for sale shortly, it needs to have some finishing touches put on and scripted before I'll be putting it out, but that won't be long!… Read the rest

I've been in a dark place for a while now.  But if I'm in a dark place, I might as well make the most of it, right?

Light up the darkness with me this year at my Luminous Masque.  Everything that glows, illuminates, luminesces or incandesces is to be found and celebrated at the Illusions event hall on November 2nd, at 4pm SLT.

Show the glow, and play with the contrast of light and dark.  Those who are the most radiant or effulgent will of course be rewarded with the promise of prizes, including goodies that I might bestow upon my favorite costumes and of course, the grand prize for the lucky pair who are voted the King and Queen of Lights.  A 1500L angel card and a new, unreleased mask made especially for the masquerade await you if you manage to claim the title!

Masks are of course required for a masquerade, but if you're short on Lindens fear not, the mask shown in the invitation will be provided as a free party favor for all attendees.  Despite surely wanting to look truly effervescent, when assembling your outfit please:

Dreamcatcher Rusa Antlers

Ariel Lunark is a very patient person.  As I've slowed my progress in getting through my commissions, she's been very understanding in the delay.  Every project has been a struggle for me lately, and so having someone be kind enough to let me take the time I need is invaluable.

She commissioned a project that had occurred to me, but that I simply hadn't and probably wouldn't get around to.  I loved the idea, and she pushed me to take it in directions I might not have.

Dreamcatcher antlers are something I thought of when I did my Dreamcatcher Nivicola Horns, but I was ready to move on to different projects at the time and it never was a priority.  Ariel originally commissioned me to make a dream catcher for the Capreolinae antlers, but I had misgivings.  I gave it a go and they didn't look right at all, the prongs were getting in the way and the arch of the center wasn't right.  So I ended up making an entirely new set of antlers, similar to the Capreolinae but simpler, and of course made out of mesh.  Mesh is just perfect for antlers, and it's lovely to be able to make seamless angles without worrying about sculpts and textures lining up.  And of course, since the new antlers were made with a dream catcher in mind, it came together far better.… Read the rest

Apsara Wings

When Deoridhe Quandry approached me with her commission, it was one that I took a special delight in.  I've been looking forward to doing it since she first suggested it and it was a lot of fun to do.  You see, Deoridhe is a fairy, and she wanted a pair of mesh fairy wings.  My first thought was "really?", but then I realized it made perfect sense.  While flexi wings might have great movement, they don't have the same customization or opportunity for detail.  Mesh wings would actually be really fun to do...

She gave me creative control, and I'm just such a sucker for curlicues and flourishes.

Deoridhe suggested the name "Apsara", inspired by the Hindu divine spirits of air and dance.  The membrane I painted in Zbrush, just putting some light and shadow and a bit of shine on there, and then I overlaid a scaley texture to hopefully evoke that delicate insect feel. I love the living, silky feel it evokes, with just the right amount of shimmer.  I also took care to do a little trick that lets the mesh shrink down to tiny or petite size, so since they're modifiable you can easily fit these to your petite avatar.… Read the rest

Olokun Helm

Now that I'm finished with the Mystic Chains, I can finally shake off some of that frustration and get back to working through commissions.  Next one up is one designed by Darlingmonster Ember, who sent me a sketch of a concept she had in mind, and let me run with it.  She described a dark Mer helmet, a sort of unseelie headdress with tendrils and scales.

When she said Mer, my mind went to iridescence and the colors of abalone.  I wanted the tendrils to be a part of the helm, and while I tried the stone in the center, it didn't seem right with a half-mask. I added my own flare to it, giving it a polished, armor-like definition.

Darlingmonster suggested we name it Olokun, for the West African goddess of the deep sea.  She's associated with the underworld, as the ruler of the sea floor where all dead sea creatures eventually lie, and rebirth and renewal, for those dead sea creatures become food for others.  She's depicted as a beautiful, black mermaid, and is known as the guardian of secrets.  For what was originally dreamt of as a mer helm, it seemed the perfect name.… Read the rest
